I read all the horrible reviews in the newspapers, but went anyway when the temperature got over 100 and there was nothing else to take the kids (4, 9,10) to see. I’d have to say all the reviewers missed the point of this movie. It’s a wonderful movie for the right audience; kids about 12 and under. I guess that many people see Dana Carvey’s name and expect to find a movie targeted to the Wayne’s World/ Austin Powers demographic but that simply is not the case. The kids were laughing out loud many times during the movie and the end credits. The story is easy enough to follow, the humor in not too cruel or scatological, and the jokes are right up a kid’s alley.
I think the filmmakers blew it a bit in the trailers for the flick. Too many adults went expecting this would be for them, but come to think of it, the only time I saw previews for this was during movies for kids. Dads, take your younger children and they’ll have a great time. My 4 year olds favorite part was the way the evil villain kept ending his devious laugh. It made me laugh too.

These are the things that made me love it.
Dana Carvey has made a crazy movie for kids who love absurd humour.
If you remember making up stories with your siblings or friends, stories that made you shoot milk out your collective noses - but made your parents roll their eyes because you were “acting silly” - then you will understand “Master of Disguise”.
I can’t remember the last time I laughed this hard in a movie theatre. I couldn’t breathe at certain points. I should warn you, in a theatre full of kids and adults I was 1 of only 3 people laughing. (No, I wasn’t stoned or drunk).
This is a movie made with Dana’s kids in mind.
I enjoyed it as if I was 7 years old again.
I hope this movie has a long life on video.
I hope you laugh until milk shoots out your nose.

This movie is set in contemporary London and its story revolves around the life of playboy Will Freeman (Hugh Grant). Freeman is an independent man who enjoys a leisurely life carved into careful sections. His friends find him desperately lonely and unfulfilled, a notion he entirely disregards. Whilst trying to find creative new ways to meet single women for casual relationships, he meets a boy named Marcus (Nicholas Hoult). Marcus is the misfit at his school, overburdened by his freethinking and chronically depressed mother, Fiona (Toni Collette). Freeman and Marcus forge an unlikely but edifying bond that transposes their generation gap and differences. Culminating in a hilarious school music performance, the two discover new ways to navigate a changing world and terms in which to redefine the meaning of family.
Saturated by the amazing music of Badly Drawn Boy, this is an enduring and enjoyable comedy. Hugh Grant’s character of the roguish unlikely hero seems ideally suited to him. Collette’s performance as a seeming shallow liberal is wonderfully dynamic, bringing depth and heart to the character. The film tackles many social issues, especially problems of male (father-son) relations, from a compelling point of view. It’s a picture of modern England that burrows into the largely untapped life of this fascinating country. The horribly undeveloped and unrealistic character of the rebellious teenage girl with whom Marcus becomes smitten is the only place where this film really lacks. Otherwise it is a pleasure to watch.
Heartwarming studio chickflick about Hugh Grant bonding with a little boy…this description didn’t send me rushing to the cinema, despite the Nick Hornsby brand. But shockingly, About a Boy isn’t a standard Hollywood prefab romcom or sentimental twaddle — it’s an actual film, sharply written, evocatively directed, beautifully acted.
The caustic British wit immediately sets the film apart from its studio comedy brethren — its actually, frequently funny. The characters feel real, lived in. The superb dual voiceover is potent rebuke to those still peddling the convential wisdom that vo’s are “uncinematic” (if this includes you you’re immediately assigned “Election” and “Adaptation”), working comfortably inside our protagonists’ heads without any dreaded ‘literary’ staining, bringing their vibrant inner lives to comic life.
So instead of the false life lessons and maudlin sentimentality films of this sort so often trade in, we get a moving, witty story about…okay, yeah…Hugh Grant bonding with a little boy. But that’s no reason not to rent it.
The widescreen picture is gorgeous (another nice departure from drearily filmed studio comedies) and the disc comes with numerous, lengthy deleted scenes that are virtually all terrific, and well worth viewing.

World War II drama that shows the battles - on and off the field - that a general must fight in order to win the war. General Casey of the US Forces in England must fight congressional representatives and his own chain of command to be allowed to complete an important mission. He must get his men’s planes out, during a small window of fair weather, in order to prevent the Germans from making more military jet planes. Although the general knows the success of his plan could decide whether the Germans get the upper hand in the war, it could also mean suicide for his men. In the darkness behind Jupiter there lurks a heretofore undiscovered planet, Planet X, boasting beings of superior intelligence. The Planet X-ers are forced to live underground because of the havoc wreaked on the surface by Ghidra, the three-headed monster. Once discovered by our astronauts, including the ultra-hip Nick Adams (spouting such phrases as “That’s right, baby!” with innocent conviction), the Planet X-ers propose that they transport Godzilla and Rodan from Earth to their planet to help rid them of the Ghidra menace. Only, as it turns out, they have a dastardly plan to use the bipedal behemoth and his flighty friend to conqur the Earth, harnessing their destructive force with “magnetic waves.” And it almost works, but for the ingenuity… well, you get it. There can be no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than watching monsters battle it out, while Nick Adams speaks in his accustomed English to others speaking dubbed English (really Japanese), like they all know what each other is saying. The DVD gives you a choice of cropped-screen or letterboxed in scrumptious Tohoscope, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround or Mono, and some more extras. The abrupt and somewhat vicious change in the way Abel acts remains hidden under his pleasant, calm exterior, until something inexplicably cracks apart, leaving him powerless to stop it.

Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly Crulla De Vil, who wants to make a fur coat out of them. Crulla has become the most popular villain in all of Disney; she’s flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun. But it’s the dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic, particularly those precocious pups. Telling the story from the dogs’ point of view is a clever conceit, a fundamental flaw of the live-action remake. –Bill Desowitz

For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story chronicles the life of a man torn between his home and his devotion to his music. In a Golden Globe-nominated performance, Andy Garcia portrays the gregarious, passionate, and obstinate Arturo Sandoval, the Grammy-winning Cuban trumpet player.
This HBO film shows how Sandoval’s life in revolutionary Cuba is affected–beginning in the early 1970s–by his zeal for his music and by the limits placed on him by his homeland.
