THE INVISIBLE MAN- Claude Rains is awesome as the man whose invisibility serum slowly rots his brain. Hunted by police, he sets out to cure himself and get revenge on the man who betrayed him. Excellent stuff! Check out the running pair of pants scene! THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS- has Vincent Price as a man on death row, framed for a murder he did not commit. He gets some help in the form of the invisibilty serum and simply walks out of prison! Can he prove his innocense and find the real killer before te serum drives him mad? Great sequel! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN- This one is strictly for laughs. A scientist (John Barrymore) invents an invisibility machine with his assistant (Margaret “Wicked Witch Of The West” Hamilton). A young woman volunteers to be turned invisible and the slapstick begins. A gang of thugs wants the machine for obvious criminal reasons. The gang even includes a stooge (Shemp Howard)! Worth a look. THE INVISIBLE AGENT- Jon Hall is the title character, dropped behind enemy lines during WW II. Can he foil the nefarious plans of the nazis? Sir Cedrick Hardwicke is head of the gestapo and Peter Lorre is an evil japanese spy. Not bad at all! INVISIBLE MAN’S REVENGE- Jon Hall is back as the invisible man. This time out, cheated and betrayed by old “friends”, he seeks vengeance at all cost. He encounters a scientist (John Carradine) who has been turning animals invisible with his secret serum, and you can guess the result! Very good! This collection is yet another goldmine from universal’s creaky vaults! Add it to your monster list…

Between directing the original “Frankenstein” in 1931 and his masterpiece “Bride of Frankenstein” in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called “The Invisible Man” in 1933. In some ways I rate “The Invisible Man” above “Frankenstein.” For one thing “The Invisible Man” has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original “Frankenstein” had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren’t commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. “Frankenstein” has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale’s later films.

In many ways “The Invisible Man” is Universal’s most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein’s Monster was a misunderstood and sympathetic creature who killed out of fear or anger, while The Invisible Man is a man driven mad by an illicit drug who kills out of shear pleasure. He commits mass murder during the film on a scale much greater than any other Universal picture. We also have to remember he is at his core a man not a monster.

Claude Rains gives a magnificent performance, in his US film debut, in the title role. Rains, who’s face was only seen on screen briefly at the end of the film, had a deep distinctive voice which was perfect for a role that was more about voice than body. This role was the start of a long and very successful film career for Rains who played costarring and supporting roles in classic films from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Also in the cast are Henry Travers, Gloria Stuart and Una O’Connor. Travers was a talented character actor who may be most recognized to film fans as Clarence the inept angel in the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Stuart, who as a starlet in the 30s appeared in dozens of films before retiring from the screen, had a career resurrection in recent years when she was cast as “old Rose” in the mega-hit “Titanic.” O’Connor, supplying comic relief as a busybody inn keeper’s wife, played numerous supporting roles in Hollywood’s golden age including a the role of Minnie in Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein.”

Of course, by 21st century standards “The Invisible Man” is antiquated. The special effects, undoubtedly cutting edge for their time, are not very impressive in the age of computer technology. Having said that, I must admit this film is still entertaining and exciting to watch. The performances, especially Claude Rains, still hold up and the direction by Whale remains spot on. If you sit back and imagine yourself as a moviegoer in the 1930s, having never seen special effects like this before, it’s easy to see how stunning this film must have been to audiences more than 70 years ago.

The $20 price tag is well worth it just to own “The Invisible Man” but in this Legacy Collection you also receive ALL of the Universal “Invisible” films (minus “Abbot & Costello Meet The Invisible Man”). It could be argued that “The Invisible Man Returns” and “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” are the only true sequels as they follow the adventures of Jack Griffin’s (Claude Rains’ character in the original) brother. “… Returns” is distinguished by Vincent Price in the title role. These two films are pleasant B-movie efforts by Universal and part of the second horror cycle of the 1940s. “The Invisible Woman” is more comedy than horror and features John Barrymore in the twilight of his career. “The Invisible Agent” was a wartime adventure featuring Universal’s top action hero of the 40s, Jon Hall, using invisibility to fight Nazis.

Having added The Invisible Man, The Mummy and The Creature to its series of Legacy Collections, I sincerely hope Universal continues with the balance of its horror titles of the 30s and 40s. I hope to see a release of the films that teamed Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi (”The Black Cat,” “The Raven,” “The Invisible Ray,” and “Black Friday”), a release of the Inner Sanctum series starring Lon Chaney and a set with all the one-off horror films (”Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the 1943 “Phantom of the Opera,” “Man-Made Monster,” “The Mad Ghoul,” etc.) of Universal’s Golden Age.

Before virtual reality and before “The Matrix,” there was the 1983 film “Brainstorm.” O.K., this movie may not compare favorably with “The Matrix,” but it does involve some of the same tangential themes that that film deals with. The comparisons with virtual reality are apt, though viewers tend to overlook this aspect of the movie. People usually associate the film, if they even talk about it today, with Natalie Wood. The actress died shortly before the film wrapped in a highly publicized boating accident, thereby cutting short a lengthy film career and giving this motion picture a stigma it still carries today. A viewing of “Brainstorm” shows the film is more than Natalie Wood; it is a compelling story about innovative technology and its potential for misuse by powerful forces. Not a particularly unique movie plot, to be sure, but “Brainstorm” is still an intriguing film largely due to its solid cast and amazing special effects. The movie holds up well twenty years after its conception, which is saying a lot considering how far film effects have come during that time.

A team of brilliant scientists headed up by Lillian Reynolds (Louise Fletcher) and Michael Brace (Christopher Walken) have finally made an enormous breakthrough in their research. After years of frustrating tests and wrangles over budgetary concerns, an amazing new virtual reality system has been born. The machines these scientists created can record the sensory perceptions of one human being and replay them for another person. Reynolds and her team can capture everything–sight, taste, touch, hearing, smell, even emotion–and record it on tape. The implications of this discovery should become apparent almost immediately. Communications, entertainment, medicine: every aspect of human endeavor will irrevocably change once this device hits the marketplace. Of course, a few other shadier applications also apply with the device, particularly military systems and mind control. Reynolds, Brace, and Brace’s estranged wife Karen soon find themselves at loggerheads with the boss of the company funding the research, the sympathetic yet uncompromising Alex Terson (Cliff Robertson). The United States military leans heavily on Terson concerning the project’s development, threatening to remove funding if Reynolds denies the wonks at the Pentagon access to her research.

Running throughout these titanic battles about the ethics of a virtual reality system and the increasingly authoritarian tactics taken by the military is the relationship between Michael and Karen Brace. The couple split up over Michael’s inability to balance his work with his personal life, a fact that Karen resents since her husband has neglected her and their son. Moreover, there is some sort of vaguely hinted at relationship between Reynolds and Michael Brace, a relationship that should hardly come as a surprise since the two have worked so closely together over the past decade or so. When Lillian Reynolds, a rabid chain smoker, records her death from a massive heart attack as it happens, Brace becomes fascinated with exploring this amazing death sequence caught on tape. The government decides Michael is too unstable to continue working on the project, thus banning him from the building and removing his security clearance from the company computers. When you muck around with a genius, however, you must make sure you have all the angles covered. Brace enlists the help of his tech savvy wife and a few other friends from the company and hacks into the company’s mainframe in order to access the tape. What follows is an amazing special effects odyssey of sight and sound as Brace learns what happens when we die. In the process of playing the tape and risking his own life, Michael and Karen heal their problematic relationship.

The best elements in “Brainstorm” are the outstanding performances from the cast fused with amazing special effects. Natalie Wood, although somewhat wasted in a smaller role, stops the heart every time she appears on screen with her amazing beauty and solid acting. Christopher Walken does what Christopher Walken does best: act slightly weird by alternating between subdued silence and loud rage. Cliff Robertson and Louise Fletcher both excel in their respective roles, especially Fletcher, who as the temperamental Lillian Reynolds is both believable and amusing. Check out the scene when she dies from her heart attack yet takes the time to attach herself to her wondrous recording device. This is, I think, exactly what a true scientist dedicated to exploring every mystery would do in a similar circumstance. As good a job as the actors do, the special effects sometimes eclipse them. Apparently, the guy in charge of this film worked on Kubrick’s “2001,” and boy does it show. The final scenes in “Brainstorm” evoke memories of Keir Dullea’s psychedelic trip at the end of “2001,” except here they look better. It would be a great experience to see this film in a movie theater.

“Brainstorm” is a beautiful, thought provoking film I never tire of watching. The scenes between Walken and Wood are wonderful, especially when they use the reality device for their own personal explorations. In this way, the movie moves beyond a mere science fiction potboiler into realms of romance and psychological drama. Sadly, the DVD edition lacks the sort of extras a film of this caliber deserves. You would think a film this prescient would inspire the folks at Warner to pull out all the stops for the disc release. Well, anyone remotely familiar with Warner DVDs knows the company couldn’t give a darn about what their discs contain. Too bad. I will still watch “Brainstorm” from time to time, but I secretly yearn for a special edition release in the near future–one with a commentary from Fletcher and Walken at the very least, along with some notes about the special effects in the film. If you like sci-fi, this is a must see experience.

My god has it been 17 years since this film was released in theatres! I saw it as a kid and was absolutely blown away by it. Louise Fletcher deserved at least an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress…she tears through her limited screentime with a ferocity and vivacity that is rarely seen these days. When she’s confronting the government types who want to steal the “mind-recording” machine she and fellow scientist Chris Walken have invented, it is truly a great acting moment. Her barking at boss Cliff Robertson to “don’t you goddamn me, sweetheart” and then proceeding to almost have a heart attack in the ladies room is a classic cinema moment. Natalie Wood had not finished filming all her scenes before her tragic death, but its hardly noticeable. She had that most incredible, expressive face and director Trumbel chose to hold on that in many key moments. When Walken plays back his memories of her (Wood and Walken’s marriage is crumbling), the joy on her face is so real. The music for the film is also amazing…from the haunting opening score to the joyous music that surrounds Walken and Wood on their journey. Fletcher’s heart attack, where she records her own death experience, is truly disturbing, and Walken’s attempt to play it back (which almost kills him)is also terrifying. A beautiful, brave film. Fletcher needs more work like this. And of course, Natalie Wood is missed greatly.

Decades ago, documentary filmmaker Leon Gast attempted to complete a feature about the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” championship bout between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire. Sundry complications, though, held up the project until its release in 1996. It was well worth the delay. From Gast’s perspective of modern history, the six weeks Ali and Foreman were forced to spend waiting in Africa for their fight to take place now looks like an important moment in America’s cultural understanding of African American roots. In a nutshell, Ali had been stripped of his heavyweight champion title because his opposition to the Vietnam War-era draft had landed him in prison. Reigning champ Foreman agreed to a Don King-promoted match in Kinshasa, but after all parties got there the fight was put off. Gast captures the charismatic Ali, in the ensuing days and weeks, going out among the people and getting to know them while the more reclusive Foreman keeps to his own company. Meanwhile, King brings over black American artists such as James Brown and the Spinners to mix it up with African musicians. The sense of excitement and connection is thrilling, as is the boxing footage of Foreman and Ali finally taking swings at one another in a titanic dul. Writers George Plimpton and Norman Mailer, each of whom was covering the fight as journalists, are on hand to recollect the details. Whether you’re a fight fan or not, this is a uniqu experience and a fascinating insight into America’s sense of identity. –Tom Keogh

The fractured Europe post-World War II is perfectly captured in Carol Reed’s masterpiece thriller, set in a Vienna still shell-shocked from battle. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) is an alcoholic pulp writer come to visit his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). But when Cotton first arrives in Vienna, Lime’s funeral is under way. From Lime’s girlfriend and an occupying British officer, Martins learns of allegations of Lime’s involvement in racketeering, which Martins vows to clear from his friend’s reputation. As he is drawn deeper into postwar intrigu, Martins finds layer under layer of deception, which he desperately tries to sort out. Welles’s long-delayed entrance in the film has become one of the hallmarks of modern cinematography, and it is just one of dozens of cockeyed camera angles that seem to mirror the off-kilter postwar society. Cotten and Welles give career-making performances, and the Anton Karas zither theme will haunt you. –Anne Hurley

In English comedy at its blackest (and funniest) pitch, this droll 1955 farce finds Alec Guinness in one of his typically deft, chameleon turns as would-be criminal mastermind Professor Marcus. When Marcus’s grand plan to pull off a train heist leads him to a strategically situated house occupied by the genteel Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson), the ensuing masqurade triggers a mordant, even macabre comedy of manners. With Marcus and his rough-hewn cronies (Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, and Danny Green) posing as a string quartet, and the dear lady’s demise seen as the means to their larcenous end, the gang’s sinister machinations are consistently, if unwittingly, foiled by the good-hearted, resourceful widow. –Sam Sutherland

Filmmakers often remark that it’s just so hard to make a bad picture that few would take on the challenge if they weren’t so naive. Steve Martin’s Bobby Bowfinger is cut from that pattern, one of those sweet, indomitable operators of Hollywood who seem to be descended directly from Ed Wood (of Plan 9 from Outer Space infamy). To resurrect his ramshackle existence, Bowfinger opts to film his accountant’s sci-fi spectacular, Chubby Rain, about aliens invading in raindrops. The snag is he needs to attach action megastar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), an actor so paranoid he counts the K’s in scripts to uncover possible Ku Klux Klan influnces. When his effort fails, Bowfinger hits on an ingenious scheme to film Ramsey without his knowledge, throwing his actors at the hapless star whenever he appears in public. Only Kit begins to believe he’s being hounded by aliens for real, and runs hysterically to his guru (Terence Stamp) at a Scientology-clone group called MindHead, where people walk around in fine suits wearing white pyramids on their heads. Deprived of his star, yet not to be undone, Bowfinger hires a look-alike, Jiff (also Eddie Murphy), to fill in. The tone of the picture is sometimes flat, rather than deadpan, but that’s nitpicking. The farce is quick and engrossing, and populated with terrific performances, especially by Eddie Murphy, whose dual role as Kit and Jiff showcases his character-building gift, and by Martin, whose Bowfinger, part con man and part would-be visionary, manages to capture your sympathies. Heather Graham’s would-be actress cheerfully sleeps her way to the top like she knows she’s supposed to, and Christine Baranski plays her shopworn method actor with myopic self-absorption. –Jim Gay
