This is the first (and only) CINERAMA film I ever saw, without doubt the most thrilling aspect of the movie is the grand scale of the Cinerama process and the multi- channel soundtrack. The transfer to DVD is an insult. In this era of digital technology it is easily possible to correct the color balance errors evident in the “seams” of this otherwise remarkable motion picture. I agree with other reviewers, lose the Turner promo. The color balance, saturation, and picture
resolution are very average, and fall well below of what the DVD process is capable. One redeeming feature is the soundtrack. Finally, after viewing the VHS tape, and Laserdisc of this movie, the DVD release incorporates the correct rear channel information of the original release. Finally, and most regrettably, this DVD release has been cropped. Don’t we buy widescreen movies to see how they were originally shot? HELLO HOLLYWOOD!
How The West Was Won is a true classic from the glory days of MGM. Everything about this film is done on a grand scale. The cast includes some of the biggest names ever to appear in a motion picture. Including: Gregory Peck, James Stewart, John Wayne, Debbie Reynolds, Spencer Tracy and Richard Widmark. The widescreen cinerama process appears dated and inconsistant by today’s standards and it should be noted that the new DVD edition is not in anamorphic widescreen. The DVD edition appears to be a new transfer from the same previous 35mm print but contains notable improvements which include brighter more accurate colors and a clarity and definition that the picture has never had before on home video. The aspect ratio is also closer to the cinerama widescreen ratio, but there is still a noticeable cropping of the sides. The film also has the characteristic visable cinerama seams. The new DVD edition is the best the film has looked outside a cinerama theatre and is probably the best edition we will ever get. The restoration effort on “My Fair Lady” cost 1.2 Million dollars over a two year period. It probably would not be economically sound to treat HTWWW to the same restoration effort as it does not have as much consumer support. If you want HTWWW I suggest that you buy this edition, otherwise you may be in for a long wait.

For those of you who do not already know this is the 3rd release of this series. Actually 4th if you count the original single DVD release making this second Viridian Collection so I wanted to clear up the differences between all of them before you arbitrarily just buy the cheapest one.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Gunslinger Girl: Box Set! Click Here
The first release Gunslinger Girl: Complete Box Set is the original single DVD releases in a nice slip case box to store them in together. The second release Gunslinger Girl Box Set - Viridian Collection is the original Viridian Collection containing all of the first release including special features on the disks but in better looking if cardboard “gatefold” style packaging that takes up the size of about a single DVD case.
Just a word of warning unlike most “Viridian Collection”s this second release is more than a simple reprice w/ cheaper packaging and lack of inserts but the anime itself differs from all previous US releases. The earlier releases were all in anamorphic widescreen and this is the first time Gunslinger Girl has been released in fullscreen.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Gunslinger Girl: Box Set! Click Here
I guess you can say this fullscreen version is closer to the “original” TV airing in Japan but the others had an excellent 16:9 aspect ration and were enhanced for widescreen TVs like the later Japanese editions were. As for the packaging in this version it has changed yet again so instead of the cardboard “gatefold” style case it now comes in an “omni” case that holds 3 DVDs and is about the size of 1 standard DVD case.
Differences from the other boxes aside the anime itself it is excellent and highly recommended. One of my all time favorites.
P.S.
Funimation you still owe me Gunslinger Girl Vol.3 from the contest I won @ Wizard World LA in 2006.

Gundam Seed Destiny Collection 1 Contains 6 Discs (Episode 1 - Angry eyes) To (Epiosde 26 - The Promise)English And Japanese Audio And The Japanese Subtiles and The Second Set Of Subtiles is To Translate The Title Of each Epiosde And The Intro and Outro songs
As the title suggests, this anime far exceeds my initial expectations. Having seen War in the Pocket, Stardust Memories, Gundam Wing and a few others, I’m no stranger to this genre but I had my reservations about this anime due to disc complaints and possible over dramatization.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Gundam Seed Destiny Anime Legends, Vol. 1! Click Here
Thankfully, I did not have disc problems. I did notice a few minor scratches and expected the worse, but they were dragons I never had to slay. In regards to drama, this anime is emotionally charged, but in a good way.
This is a well conceived anime to the point where you will be pulled through a large range of emotions as a result of how the show unfolds. You’ll find yourself anxious, frustrated, happy, sad - the whole gambit. I’m not into spoilers, so I’ll merely say there were points where I almost looked up what happens online because I couldn’t view the episodes fast enough - that’s how engaging it is.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Gundam Seed Destiny Anime Legends, Vol. 1! Click Here
If you purchase gundam seed (vol 1 and 2), I (highly) recommend purchasing gundam seed destiny (vol 1 and 2) along with it. Destiny is a direct sequel to seed and equally as good as the first show. I found it highly enjoyable and look forward to any possible new gundam series.

My husband & I saw the first part of this film when it aired on TV back in March. It was the same night the John Adams series began & which we were planning to watch. We were so sucked into Black Magic, we totally forgot about John Adams. This is an absolutely amazing, remarkable film, on the same high quality level as a Ken Burns-type documentary. The stories are unforgettable…incredibly moving and touching. As a child of the 80s/90s, I learned so much - it’s mind-boggling to me that a person would be passed over or banned because of the color of their skin. I’m a huge NBA fan, and couldn’t believe the Detroit Pistons passed up Earl Monroe because he went to a smaller black college! For basketball fans, the classic NBA footage is out of this world - early film of Earl Monroe, Wilt Chamberlain, Willis Reed, Oscar Robertson & so many more - this is a must own for any basketball fan!! I can’t wait to get my copy & can’t recommend it enough!
I recently saw this ESPN production via video tape that I received from a friend of mine. This film recounts the history of small, black college basketball. Let me first say that I am a white middle aged conservative from the south and I would say anyone who is a college basketball and/or a history fan would be absolutely thrilled w/ this film. All the familiar names are there, Willis Reed, Earl Monroe, Charles Oakley, etc that fans may know came from these type of schools but the best parts are the names and stories of guys we’ve never heard of. They are truly uplifting and at times tragic stories. I was raised in Durham, NC and am (I thought) very knowledgeable of area basketball history but had never heard of John McClendon, arguably one of the leading pioneers in the game. The film also examines a lot of the social and political problems of the 40’s,50’s and beyond in regards to race and discrimination. This is, in a word, wonderful television. I would highly recommend this purchase.

The Snowman
This charming British animated short film (it’s just 23 minutes long) is a 1982 production of London’s Channel 4, based on the classic children’s book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequnce based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. This is one of the very few Christmas tapes on the market that really deserves to be a holiday perennial, a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination. –David Chute
Father Christmas
This irreverent Santa breaks from tradition in many ways. He has no Mrs., owns only four reindeer, and decides to convert his sleigh into an airborne motor home for a pre-Christmas vacation. He finds France too snooty, Scotland too cold, and Las Vegas just right. Tanned and rested, he returns to the North Pole in time to sort through the mail, pack up the toys, and hit the skies. Like the Santa of the Raymond Briggs book on which this 24-minute video is loosely based, he narrates his own story (splendidly voiced by Los Angeles stage actor William Dennis Hunt). But fans of the 1973 book will find the animated version far less cranky than the original. Although the book was aimed at ages 4-8, the video may have a wider appeal, depending on how you feel about the children seeing Santa gambling at the casino tables, dreaming of bikini-clad babes, and suffering a bout of diarrhea. –Kimberly Heinrichs

In 1972, newly radicalized Hollywood star Jane Fonda joined forces with cinematic innovator Jean-Luc Godard and collaborator Jean-Pierre Gorin in an unholy revolutionary artistic alliance. Tout va bien tells the story of a wildcat strike at a sausage factory, as witnessed by an American reporter (Fonda) and her has-been New Wave film director husband (Yves Montand), culminating in a free-ranging assault on consumer capitalism and ineffective leftists. The Criterion Collection is proud to present this masterpiece of radical cinema, a caustic critiqu of society, marriage, and revolution in post-1968 France.

Kill the Umpire and Safe at Home reside cozily on this family-friendly disc, a pair of entertaining movies about baseball-crazy characters with very different reasons for getting close to the game. The 1950 Kill the Umpire stars William Bendix as Bill Johnson, a working man so enamored of America’s pastime that he regularly loses jobs because he can’t stay out of his favorite New York ballpark when he’s supposed to be at the office. Loudly disdainful of all umpires, Bill gets both a blessing and a comeuppance when his father-in-law (Ray Collins), a retired ump, sends him off to umpire school to learn the profession he deserves. After a lot of resistance, Bill understands the basic nobility of being the guy people love to hate despite also being necessary to baseball. The script is by Frank Tashlin, the animation director who would soon have better things to do in the 1950s and beyond, such as directing Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and guiding Jerry Lewis in some of his best vehicles. Indeed, Kill the Umpire, in many ways, looks like a collection of old cartoon gags connected by Bendix’s charming performance. But under the sure hand of seasoned director Lloyd Bacon (Knute Rockne All-American), it all comes together nicely.
The 1962 Safe at Home is built around the presence of New York Yankees stars Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, who prove stiff but game playing themselves in the story of a little boy who gets in trouble for overstating his friendship with them. Young Hutch Lawton (Bryan Russell), a motherless child trying hard to help his preoccupied dad (Don Collier) build a business, brags to his Little Leagu team that he knows Maris and Mantle, then sets out on a journey to talk the legendary sluggers into going back with him to meet the team. William Frawley (who also appears in Kill the Umpire) helps keep the pace going as the Yankees’ manager, and Patricia Barry is a welcome presence as Mr. Lawton’s love interest. –Tom Keogh

If you thought The Recruit was full of surprises, Basic will spin your head around. Assuming that cleverness is its own reward, this military mystery shares many of The Recruit’s strengths and weaknesses, offering multi-layered deception as its dramatic raison d’etre. Copping plenty of machismo attitude befitting a semi-effective thriller from Die Hard director John McTiernan, John Travolta stars as an ex-Army Ranger-turned-DEA agent, recruited by an Army investigator (Connie Nielsen) to solve the fratricide of a reviled Sergeant (Samul L. Jackson) who was allegedly killed while commanding a Special Forces training mission in the hurricane-swept rainforests of Panama. Two survivors (Giovanni Ribisi in a showboat role, and Brian Van Holt) recall the ill-fated mission as the truth unfolds, Rashomon-style, in a series of repetitive flashbacks. Tricky enough to hold one’s attention as it grows increasingly irrelevant, Basic is so enamored of its bogus ingenuity that its ultimate twist is a letdown. A second viewing might prove rewarding, if only to confirm that it all holds together. –Jeff Shannon
