NAUGHTY GIRL (1956)co-written by Bardot’s husband/svengali - Vadim just a year before her breakthrough hit “And God Created Woman”. Fun romp with Bardot in her early gamin look. Color/ widescreen

COME DANCE WITH ME (1959) - wild mix of genres from gangster film to musical to sex comedy. Plus you get to see Bardot dance which is a treat in and of itself. color

LOVE ON A PILLOW (1962) - co-written and directed by Vadim. Taken from biographical elements of Bardot’s life. A man tries to commit suicide and is helped in his recovery by Bardot. Co-starring Robert Hossein. Good early Vadim film. More dramatic role for Bardot like her roles in COntempt and The Truth. color/widescreen

TWO WEEKS IN SEPTEMBER (1967) - Swinging London in the late 60’s. Great print with wonderful colors. Cool shots of London, underground clubs and a very sexy Bardot in her more familiar blonde bomshell look. Color/widescreen

THE VIXEN (1969) - Bardot helps a writer get through his writer’s block as only she knows how to do. Toward the end of her career but Bardot still looks fantastic. And shows a more mature comedic talent. color

Several of these films were released in 2000 from Anchor Bay. But this set includes better prints and nice supplemental material. A good addition for the foreign cinephile’s library.

Being a lover of retro European cinema and a Bardot fan, for a couple of decades now, I was delighted that these much sought after collector additions of “Bardot” or ‘BB’ (as she was/is known to the French), films was now available from amazon. Speaking from a female point of view, to me Brigitte Bardot, was France’s own answer to Marilyn Monroe. Not that one should compare her in many respects (and she certainly would resist such comparisons), but the impact she had on contemporary cinema, culture, fashion, and sexuality (including the womens movement), is often under-estimated. Even when you look around today, at both American and European actresses and models, Bardot’s influence is ever more apparent. The full lips (though unlike Bardot, often cosmetically enhanced mind you), the bed hair, the adrogynously sensual body ,the pout and childishly carefree, earthy sexuality, that Bardot introduced into vogue, are still much evident in today’s style. Most young audiences wouldn’t realize that Bardot really was ahead of her time and set the trend for generations to come. A ‘petite bourgeois’ from a conservative Parisian family, who though launched onto the screen by first husband and director ‘Vadim’, somewhat innocently and quite unselfconsciously become a pioneer and symbol of the new female sexuality. A reaction (or perhaps continental offering)to post world war II and 1950’s American morality. Bardot was quite simply the original ’sex kitten’, a phrase perfectly suited to her unique playful, child/woman brand of sex appeal.

Yet underneath the tousled mane of bleached blond hair, provocative figure and pout, you could tell Bardot had a brain, a star quality and sensitive intelligence that often both carried and eclipsed, mediocre scripts, direction and male co-stars.

This quality dvd collection of subtitled (thank goodness, not dubbed), BB films, (all in colour for those interested) covers a varied selection of works: from the early very young, gamine, mid-fifties style Brigitte(Naughty Girl /’Cette Sacree Gamine’)and late 50’s Classic ‘blonde bombshell,pin-up’ Bardot(Come Dance With Me/Voulez Vouz Dancer Avec Moi?); to the early beatnik and then later swinging sixties style of (Love On A Pillow’/ Les Repos du Guerrier’ and ‘Two Weeks in September/’A Coeur Joie’). And finally, moving into the very early 70’s stage of her movie career, not long from retirement, with (The Vixen/ ‘Les Femmes’). It also features an extra, rather well narrated short documentary on ‘Bardot’, the Mythology of the Sex Symbol, with Hugh Heffner amongst those interviewed.

French cinema watchers and enthusiasts no doubt often found some of the English and ‘Hollywood’ re-naming of these films rather frivolous and silly. They often totally miss the point and don’t translate the meaning at all. But one must remember I suppose, at that time the object was to sell ‘The Bardot’ sexy image rather than the films themselves; their French ‘arty’ nature often being lost on American mainstream audiences. But for example, retitling ‘Le Repos du Guerrier’ which translates in English to ‘Warrior’s Rest’, or ‘Warrior Comes to Rest’ to ‘Love on a Pillow’, is rather ridicuously ‘fluffy’ and shallow, given the somewhat dark side to the films’ premise. That being: an abusive alcoholic’s, co-dependant and destructive relationship with a pretty, middle class young woman. When you think of how worlds apart American cinema was at that time to the more sophisticated earthy nature of the French, it’s only more testament to Bardot’s star power to sell these films abroard. She really did play a major part in putting French and foreign films in general, on the world map. And though hardly raising an eyebrow by today’s standards, they were very risque for their time, certainly as far as mainstream films go.

Out of this collection. I enjoyed “Les Femmes” (Where Bardot shows wit and flair for sardonic comedy and timing along with tremendous ‘chic’, though I found the flashbacks on the previous women/lovers, boring) and ” Voulez Vous Dancer Avec Moi?”;(Brigitte, I think at her most stunningly beautiful and charming - a great dancer too! and assisted by a strong supporting cast), the most. Both delightful light, romantic comedies, which I think always suited Bardot best.

Perhaps strictly for Bardot fans, none the less it gives you a glimpse into Bardot’s career as an actress and French super star/sex symbol. Though there are times when Bardot appears a little bored in her films, as if going through the motions, almost bemused at the larger than life image and legend created around her. She none the less is always a pleasure to watch. If not always a great actress, then certainly always an interesting and beautiful presence. It’s not surprising really that Bardot retired early to devote her life to caring for animals. No doubt she not only got fed up with it all, but was smart enough to realize it best to quit on top of her game. Leave before youthful beauty began to fade, and let her myth and icon perpetuate itself, as it has continued to do.

This film focuses on an English family which struggles to cope with the Blitz during World War Two. The devastation of attacks on London is brilliantly juxtaposed with the idyllic countryside to which Grace Rohan (Sarah Miles) relocates with her children after her husband Clive (David Hayman) goes off to war. Much of the story is based on director John Boorman’s own childhood experiences at a time when there seemed so little reason for hope. “Glory” certainly describes the eventual Allied victory but also the courage of the English people meanwhile and certainly the affirmation of shared values which bound so many families together amidst fear, separation, death, and destruction. Much of the film’s focus is on Grace’s father (Ian Bannen), a patriarch to be sure and (at times) something of an eccentric, but a loving and decent man nonetheless, struggling to cope with all manner of domestic crises while providing a safe haven for daughters Grace, Faith, Hope, and Charity. He and grandson Billy (Sebastian Rice Edwards) forge a special bond in response to the pastoral “harem” in which they find themselves. This is a charming film but also one which also offers some sobering insights into how disruptive wartime conditions can be, especially to a sensible and sensitive boy such as Billy. His perspective is presumably Boorman’s (re-established years later) and done so with style and grace.

This is one of my top 20 all time favorite movies. If you can imagine all the trials and tribulations, joys and sorrows and aches and pains of childhood and then imagine going through WWII at the same time you have some idea of what this movie is about. Told primarily through the eyes of a young boy, this movie shows a very personal experience of what the Home Front was like for London civilians. Neighbors get bombed out, shrapnel lies in the streets, friends die, and life somehow still goes on. The movie does a really good job of showing how the war could be a source of wonder to a child living through it and a cathartic experience for the adults. At the same time it can be incredibly funny and this is really why the film is so good. Probably my favorite scene is when the grandfather sends the young boy fishing with orders not to come back until he has caught some fish. A close second is the german jam scene. If you like period films, you’ll love this. If you just like good movies, not too serious or too silly or too sad, give this one a viewing. Also, the punting instructions given in the movie actually work. Soon after watching this film, I ended up in Oxford, England and was able to teach myself to punt in less than an hour just from remembering this movie, so it’s also educational!

A tepid reworking of Warren Beatty’s Heaven Can Wait (itself a remake of 1941’s Here Comes Mr. Jordan), Down to Earth tries to mold comedian Chris Rock into an amiable romantic lead, but it softens the scathingly observant humor that made Rock a standup successor to Richard Pryor. Rock’s aggressive style is bracingly expressed in a few good scenes, but through most of this movie–from the directors of American Pie–he struggles with dialogu that would barely pass muster in a low-rated sitcom. Edgy potential loses out to crowd-pleasing with the familiar body-switch formula: by way of premature death and bad timing on the part of heaven’s Vegas-styled gatekeepers (played by Eugene Levy and Chazz Palminteri), Rock–as struggling comedian Lance Barton–is reincarnated as a 55-year-old white billionaire with a nasty reputation.

Adjusting (too easily) to his racial transition, Lance charms a hospital administrator (Regina King) who’s amazed to see the selfish white billionaire turning into romantic philanthropist. This allows plenty of black/white-contrast jokes (did you ever see a fat, middle-aged white guy who’s into hip-hop?), and Rock, who cowrote the screenplay, still manages to work some pointed politics into the movie’s good-natured tone. It’s guaranteed that some will find Down to Earth quite entertaining, but others will wonder how potent this comedy could have been if Rock had been more willing to confront the harsher truths that lurk beneath the humor. –Jeff Shannon

Happily, Groucho is still Groucho in his first post-Marx brothers movie, and that’s enough to keep this showbiz farce going. The rather labored plot has Groucho getting his longtime fiancee, Carmen Miranda, booked at Manhattan’s glamorous Copacabana club, but as two different performers: a Brazilian bombshell (the usual Carmen Miranda act, without the pineapple on the head) and a veiled French chanteuse called Mademoiselle Fifi. Some of the nightclub stuff has a retro appeal, and the appearance of real-life showbiz columnists (like Earl Wilson) brings a whiff of Sweet Smell of Success. But mostly there’s Groucho, still flinging one-liners in a zone of his own. Even when the material isn’t first-rate, his delivery never wavers from the withering skepticism of the Marx brothers’ early days. The old greasepaint mustache comes out for one typically Marxist number, with the remainder of the songs handled by Miranda and wet-eyed crooner Andy Russell. –Robert Horton

Need a good cry? A real fistful-of-Kleenex, cathartic, “Oh (sob) my (sob) God (sob)” weeping jag? The deft and lovely Miracle in the Rain is exactly what the love doc ordered. The 1956 classic stars Jane Wyman as Ruth, that long-lost movie heroine type: a working-girl spinster caring for her ailing mother, toiling at her mundane job and feeling life’s passing her by. Well, life has a little surprise up its sleeve, in the form of a random meeting on the streets of New York, with a soldier named Arthur (Van Johnson), who’s on temporary leave during World War II. The streets are dingy and the rain is pounding, but the mood is changed; two lost souls connect. What follows is a believable, heart-wrenching tale with a great script (courtesy of Ben Hecht), and terrific performances by the two leads and a brassy Eileen Heckart as Ruth’s best pal (and chaperone on the couple’s first date!). The film presages the later weepy Somewhere in Time, with its echoes of fate, chance, and even the role of a tiny coin. Fans of romance of all eras, who believe what Arthur says–”Love never dies”–should wrap themselves in the cocoon of Miracle in the Rain–and never stop believing in miracles. –A.T. Hurley

Al Pacino’s character in the first two Godfather films was a man increasingly drawn into himself, pulling an entire family history and legacy along with him into a personal oblivion. Pacino’s performance as the titular race car driver in Sydney Pollack’s Bobby Deerfield also suggests a fellow adrift in his own company, his very profession underscoring isolation behind the wheel at top speeds. Living with his French lover (Anny Duperey), Deerfield’s solipsism (perfectly captured in a dream sequnces in which he appears almost autistic) begins to crack when he meets and falls for a dying woman (Marthe Keller). Emerging from his shell just as she is fading away, both the irony of the situation and Deerfield’s first experience with real love wake our hero from his spiritual slumber. Pollack’s attempt at a mainstream art-house movie didn’t entirely work, and critics have been brutal on both its serious aspirations and Pacino’s locked-down performance. But there is something in the film that convincingly suggests a yearning for passion and experience even at the great cost of loss, and Pacino’s portrayal of a man who steps out of his car and onto the collective bus of ordinary sorrow is rather moving. –Tom Keogh
